WHATS UP BALLERS!
Last Wednesday night, the Ball inn team was invited to go play and grab content at the new Splashy Runs (that’s how we’ll name em for now…) in Barcelona.
Marquie Smith aka Splashy is an American model and professional dunker that lives in Barcelona, who we met at various basketball events and dunk competitions (just like this one in Paris). Splashy, with the help of his close friends Galgo, Paulo and Joaquin, got a group of 14 skilled amateur players together for some friendly yet intense games.
We rolled up and realised this was about to be a serious game. Players were geared up in the latest sneakers and most were taller than 185cm, something we don’t see often around Spain at the amateur levels. The organising team had brought free water and bananas and a full media crew. We were excited and waiting for our turn to play. The court was still occupied by some senior ballers (70-80+) playing 3 on 3… FULL COURT, still ballin’, still trash talking. Man…we were all amazed by them goldies!
After a great session, we asked one of the players how he felt about the run. Victor is a Scottish baller that recently moved to Barcelona from Paris. And here’s what he had to say:
“I’ve been playing basketball on and off for over 13 years now, so my level is pretty decent and I like to get a good run in. At this level, though, it can be hard to find the right balance between experienced players but a casual positive vibe.
When I heard Splashy was getting a group together to play, I knew I wanted to check it out. I know basketball cliques can be pretty closed off sometimes, so I came into the evening thinking i might have a tough time getting on the court.
The reality couldn’t have been further from that. Everyone was happy to be there and chatting on the sidelines waiting for our time slot to take over the court.
Splashy immediately split us into teams and I was happy to see I was playing with good players that would push me to play smart. I had the freedom to try new moves, and when I messed up it only made me want to keep going , try again, and improve.
It’s a great feeling to know you have a group of dedicated players who are all willing to turn up and give their all for a couple hours. Splashy says he’s going to make this a regular meet up, and I know I’m taking him up on that offer.”
Just like Victor said, it was a great run to be a part of. Good level of indoor 5v5 basketball, good vibes all around and the chance to meet fellow ballers in Barcelona. We’ll be back. Thanks to Splashy and all the people involved in the organisation!
